The History of Laser Visions Correction

About the Procedure    |    The History of Laser Vision Correction    |    Custom Vue™ Individualized Laser Vision Correction

Since the late 1970’s, incisional refractive surgery has treated nearsightedness and astigmatism and allowed people all over the world to experience a new kind of freedom. Now, refractive surgery is experiencing the dawning of a new era with the advent of the excimer laser. For millions of people, the excimer laser could represent the first step towards less dependence on corrective lenses. In fact, LASIK is now the most popular elective procedure performed in the world.

The excimer laser is a computer controlled cool beam laser that gently reshapes the cornea, thereby reducing or eliminating a variety of refractive errors. The excimer laser allows Dr. Munden to achieve more accurate results than with previous technology such as RK.

PRK or Photo-Refractive Keratectomy treats refractive errors by removing tissue from the surface of the cornea. In less than a minute, the laser removes the proper amount of tissue while it reshapes the epithelial layer. For 2-3 days there is mild discomfort until the epithelium heals and covers the treated areas. PRK is most often used to treat low to moderate amounts of nearsightedness and astigmatism.
