About Dr. Munden
Clinical Excellence and Compassionate Care
Ophthalmologist Paul M. Munden, M.D.
In 1996, Paul Munden gave up a promising academic career in medicine to return to West Texas to care for his ailing father. As an assistant professor at the University of Iowa from 1992-1996, Dr. Munden taught ophthalmology residents how to diagnose and treat glaucoma. The University of Iowa's loss was a significant gain for residents of Amarillo and surrounding communities.
A board-certified ophthalmologist who completed a fellowship in glaucoma at one of the top eye centers in the country, Dr. Munden offers comprehensive eye care for adults and children. He is committed to clinical excellence and compassionate care whether he is performing a routine checkup or a complex surgical procedure.
Approximately half of Dr. Munden's practice is devoted to cataract patients. He is pleased to offer cataract surgery without needles, patches or stitches, today's gold standard. Other areas of expertise include diabetic retinopathy, cornea transplants, surgery for treatment of crossed eyes (strabismus), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and, of course, glaucoma.
Dr. Munden recently purchased a scanning laser ophthalmoscope, the only one in the region. he uses this sophisticated equipment to detect glaucoma damage at its earliest stage, when it is most treatable. "Patients no longer need to travel to a major city to receive 'super specialized' glaucoma care," he notes.
Focus on Education
Educating patients about their condition and their treatment options -- taking time to answer their questions and address their concerns -- is a high priority for Dr. Munden. "When patients have a chronic condition like glaucoma, they are more likely to adhere to their treatment plan and to make and keep follow-up appointments if they do not have a good understanding of their eye disorder," Dr. Munden explains.
